February is American Heart Month

American Heart Month takes place in February to raise awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death among Americans, and to urge Americans to reduce their risks for cardiovascular diseases by engaging in healthy living.

01 Yolanda Hernandez_Mary Ivanovich_Jane Szymczak_Vanessa Banovic_Go Red ValpoEarlier this month, Valpo Goes Red kicked off the season’s fundraising events with a heart-healthy breakfast held at Valparaiso University’s Harre Union Ballroom. The event was part of the Go Red for Women movement – now 10 years strong – which raises awareness of women’s risk factors for cardiovascular disease and steps to take toward a healthier life style.

In attendance from Laciak>cpa were Jane Szymczak, Director of Client Services, Margaret Griggs, and their guests Yolanda Hernandez and Vanessa Banovic of Silver Spoon Restaurant, and Mary Ivanovich of NCM Media Networks. Upcoming events will include the American Heart Association’s annual Heart of Gold gala, to be held at the Radisson Celebrity Ballroom in Merrillville on Saturday, April 20, 2013. Later this year, watch for the Heart Walk events to take place September 7th at the Lake County Fairgrounds and September 28th at Porter Country Coffee Creek in Chesterton.

Please call 219-996-4958 on how you can help with these events and help raise awareness in the fight against heart disease.

Buy Local This Holiday Season

“It definitely pays to buy local,” which was the message conveyed recently by The Times Media Company publisher Bill Masterson to members of the Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce.  In his address, Masterson announced a region-wide initiative, It Pays to Buy Local, which asks consumers to buy from local merchants instead of national businesses to drive dollars back into local businesses.  He credited The Times Media Company advertising director Lisa Daugherty with developing this awareness campaign.

The campaign has three focuses: (1) To educate consumers to the benefits of buying local, (2) to drive more traffic to local chamber member businesses and (3) to strengthen local chamber membership and unite local businesses with their chamber.  This campaign was inspired by a similar campaign undertaken by American Express which contends that for every $100 dollars spent in the region, $68 immediately returns back to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures.

Masterson challenges consumers in the region to commit to switching at least $50 from non-local vendors to three locally-owned vendors a month. He further encourages local businesses to display the “It Pays to Buy Local” sticker in their store windows to build consumer awareness of this program. The sticker is a reminder to everyone that buying local saves time, saves money and helps communities stay strong and competitive.

The Buy Local initiative is a partnership of the Northwest Indiana Chambers of Commerce, The Times Media Company and NIPSCO.

Joe Laciak to Speak at Chesterton/Duneland Chamber Luncheon

Wednesday, May 26, 2010, 11:30 AM
Westchester Public Library Service Center, 100 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton, IN

Last year was a big wake up call for small business owners. Despite working harder than ever, many felt they paid too much in taxes, or profits fell short of expectations, or both.

Unfortunately, the challenge continues in 2010. With excessive spending coming from Washington, undoubtedly the government will make every effort to recoup this money from every available source – including you, the taxpayer.  And if you plan on borrowing this year, it’s a fact that money remains tight due to regulations imposed on the banking industry.

As we emerge from the Great Recession, the playing field has changed, as well as the players. The weak are gone; the strong remain, but the strategies that made you successful in the past won’t guarantee your success going forward.

Given these challenges, what steps should you take this year to take control of your business and regain control of your life?  Joe Laciak, Founder and President of Laciak>cpa, will offer guidance in these important areas.

For more information on joining the Chesterton Duneland Chamber of Commerce, please call their office at 219-926-5513 or visit www.chestertonchamber.org.
